2,6-Di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenol (BHT, also known as dihydroxybutylphenol) is a phenolic synthetic antioxidant. It is a white crystalline or crystalline powder with almost no odor or taste. It is relatively stable to heat. It blocks the oxidation chain reaction of oils through its own auto-oxidation, effectively preventing the oxidation and rancidity of fats and oily foods, and extending the shelf life of the products.
BHT-Application:
I. Food and Oil Industry
Edible oils and oil-containing foods: BHT is mainly used in animal and vegetable oils, fried foods, biscuits, instant noodles, nuts and seeds (only for fried types) and other products to prevent oil oxidation and rancidity, maintaining the freshness and flavor of the products. According to the GB 2760 standard, the maximum usage amount in fat, oil and emulsified fat products as well as fried nuts and seeds is 0.2g/kg (based on the content of oil).
Gum-based candies: In gum-based candies, the maximum usage amount of BHT is 0.4g/kg.
Application scope: BHT can be used in various food categories such as vegetable oils, animal oils, artificial cream, canned cooked nuts and seeds.
II. Cosmetics and Personal Care Products
Antioxidant stabilizers: In cosmetics, BHT is used as an antioxidant to prevent the oxidation and deterioration of oils, lipids and active ingredients in the product when they come into contact with air, avoiding changes in odor, color or texture, and ensuring product quality and stability. It can withstand high temperatures and is highly effective in certain raw material production processes.
Application concentration: According to the assessment opinion of the European Union Consumer Safety Science Committee, BHT is considered safe when the concentration in persistent products is lower than 0.8%. In practical applications, the added concentration is usually lower (such as about 0.1% in persistent products and about 0.5% in rinsing products).
Application scope: It is commonly used in products containing fat and cosmetics containing active ingredients or plant extracts in the form of water-based emulsions.

Pharmaceutical excipients (antioxidants): BHT can be used as a stabilizer in pharmaceutical preparations to enhance the stability of drugs and liposoluble vitamins, preventing them from oxidizing and deteriorating during storage.
