Pectin Food Grade Thickener

Pectin Food Grade Thickener
Details:
Pectin is a natural high-molecular polysaccharide that is widely present in the cell walls and inner layers of higher plants, serving as a supporting substance between plant cells. It typically appears as a white to pale yellow powder and is soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents. The gelation property of pectin depends on its degree of esterification, which classifies it into high-methoxy pectin (which needs to gel under high sugar and acidic conditions) and low-methoxy pectin (which needs to gel in the presence of divalent metal ions such as calcium). Pectin has excellent gelation, thickening, emulsifying and stabilizing functions. Additionally, as a water-soluble dietary fiber, it also has health benefits such as lowering blood lipids, adsorbing heavy metal ions, and promoting bowel movement in food, medicine, cosmetics and industrial fields.

Application-Pectin

I. Food and Beverage Industry
Gel and Gelling Agent: The most classic application of pectin is in the production of jams, jellies, and fruit preserves, helping to create the ideal gel texture of the products and achieving good taste and spreadability. In candy manufacturing, its gel property is also utilized to produce soft candies.
Thickeners and stabilizers: As a thickening agent, pectin can increase the viscosity of juices, beverages, yogurt, and ice cream, preventing sedimentation or stratification; as a stabilizer, it can improve the smooth texture of ice cream, prevent ice crystal growth, and enhance the stability of proteins in acidic milk beverages.
Texture improvement and preservation: In jams, jellies, baked goods, and dairy products, pectin can enhance the texture and taste of the products. By leveraging its film-forming property and biocompatibility, pectin has also been studied for application in food coating preservation, which helps inhibit the growth of surface microorganisms and extend the shelf life of fresh products.
II. Medicine and Health Supplements
Health-promoting functional components: Pectin is an important water-soluble dietary fiber that is not digested or absorbed by the human body. However, it can promote intestinal peristalsis and regulate the intestinal flora. Therefore, it is often used in health foods for relieving constipation, regulating blood lipids and cholesterol.
Drug formulation excipients: Due to their non-toxic and biocompatible properties, pectin is used in the pharmaceutical field as a key component of the drug delivery system to assist in achieving controlled drug release. Additionally, it has also been used as an ingredient in drugs for treating diarrhea and for removing heavy metals from biological systems.
III. Cosmetics and Personal Care Products
Skin care active ingredients: Research has shown that specific sources of pectin have excellent antioxidant properties, inhibit tyrosinase (for whitening) and elastase (for anti-wrinkle) activities, and have the potential to be applied in anti-aging and whitening and spot-reducing skin care products.
Formula and Anti-Allergy Application: In cosmetic formulations, pectin can be used as a thickening agent and binder, such as in toothpaste, lip balm, and other products. Due to its non-irritating nature, it is also suitable for use in cosmetics that need to be ingested. The specially treated pectin polysaccharides also have anti-allergic properties and can be added to creams, essences, and other products to meet the needs of sensitive skin.
