Salicylic Acid is a lipid-soluble organic acid with the chemical formula C₇H₆O₃. It is found in plants such as willow bark and white willow tree. It was originally extracted from willow bark in the early days, hence it is also called willow acid. At room temperature, it is a white crystalline powder that is slightly soluble in cold water and easily soluble in hot water, ethanol and other organic solvents. Salicylic Acid has multiple characteristics such as exfoliation, anti-inflammatory, broad-spectrum antibacterial, and bidirectional regulation of the stratum corneum. It can soften the stratum corneum and unclog pores, and is also effective in improving seborrheic dermatitis and folliculitis. In the medical and cosmetic fields, its efficacy is mainly determined by the concentration: 1%-3% has the effect of promoting keratinization and relieving itching, 5%-10% can dissolve and exfoliate the keratin, and concentrations of 25% and above are corrosive and can be used to treat corns and calluses.
